NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness. It allows college athletes to make money from who they are their name, personal brand, social media, appearances, endorsements, camps, autographs, and merchandise while still competing in college sports. NIL is permitted under rules set by the NCAA, but deals must follow school, conference, and state guidelines. The key distinction: NIL money comes from brands, businesses, or collectives not directly from the school and smart athletes treat it like a business asset, not a side hustle.
